Our Mission

The Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming (ISCG) at the University of Macau was established in August 2003 as a not-for-profit gambling research and development organisation. Its mission is to build bridges between gambling theory and practice that lead to the healthy development of the gaming industry in Macau and across Asia.

In light of its mission, ISCG seeks to establish strong intellectual foundations for Responsible Gambling, inject fresh and innovative ideas into gaming management, and provide a world-class research environment and education to academics and students who are interested in gaming management.

ISCG conducts research on many theoretical and operational aspects of gambling that include the economic and social impacts of the gaming industry, gaming laws and regulations, gaming surveillance and technology, casino marketing and management, and other issues arising from casino operations. ISCG brings together leading experts from various areas such as mathematics and statistics, economics, law, management, marketing, information systems, sociology, history, psychology, and other academic areas.

ISCG regularly advises the government and government-related organisations on issues relating to gambling policy formulation, research, and analysis. In addition, it provides professional advisory and training services to businesses in the gaming industry.

ISCG aims to be one of the leading centres for the study of gambling in Asia. To achieve this goal, the institution will continue to provide top-class research and training services to all interested parties. It will:

  • Conduct basic and applied research on all issues relating to gambling;
  • Provide advice to the government on all issues relating to gambling, gaming industry development and regulation;
  • Build bridges between academic researchers around the world and gaming operators;
  • Help solve practical problems arising from casino operations;
  • Provide professional training to personnel working in the gaming entertainment industry.
